Adding a search engine in mobile Chromium-based browsers
Last updated : 18/1/2023
Introduction
This is a short guide on adding a search engine in mobile Chromium-based browsers such as Bromite. Unfortunately, due to upstream mobile Chromium's limitations, internet access is mandatory for this guide. In addition, some Chromium-based browsers such as Mulch are incompatible with this method, so I will list which browsers that are compatible with this guide.
The guide
- Ensure your device is connected to the internet & your chosen Chromium-based browser has access to internet.
- Enter your preferred search engine address and any random query.
Here's an example for Mojeek : https://mojeek.com/search?q=random
- Go to Settings > search engine. Your preferred search engine should now appear in the "Recently visited" section. Select it.
The list
Compatible browsers
- Bromite (last tested is v102.0.5005.92)
- CalyxOS' Chromium fork (last tested is v103.0.5060.71, which came with July 2022 CalyxOS A12L security update)
- Ungoogled Chromium (last tested is v99.0.4844.51-1)
Incompatible browsers
- Mulch (it does recognize & add Gigablast properly though)
Last tested is v109.0.5414.86.
Compatible search engines
- /e/ spot
- Disroot SearxNG
- Mojeek (though it returns search query by default)
- Probably any other search engines that returns no search query in the address bar by default. Though search engines that reveals search queries can work, you're probaby better off opening & searching with those.
